In the upper room, Jesus took a towel and girded
Himself. After that, He poured water in a basin and began to wash
the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the same towel He was
girded with. By His example and words they were taught
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed
your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have
given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his
master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If
you know these things, blessed are you if you do them (John 13:14-17).
Earlier He had instructed, "But he that is
greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall
exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself
shall be exalted." (Matt. 23:10-12)
She who fulfills her God given role spends her
life, washing, cooking, cleaning, caring for the sick, and helping
others in ways too numerous to list. I have often thought that
the woman's tasks put her in the best position to become the greatest
in the kingdom of God. She is in the role of a servant.
A Christian woman may be very intelligent. She
may hold numerous degrees and she may have the ability to have
a fabulous career. She could earn a salary so big that she could
hire all the servants she desired to do her household work for
her.
Though she has the ability to do anything, the
woman who is most precious in God's sight is the one who is willing
to be a servant. For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits
eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy
place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit" (Isaiah
57:14-16).
In the Upper Room, we learned so much about who
our God really is and about who He wants us to be. Are you following
His example? Are you listening to His Words?
