Teaching Our Children Christian Ethics

Sandy Ditoro

All the cool girls were laughing and making fun of Heather, a mentally handicapped girl in their class. Paige was torn. Was there some way to stay in favor with the cool girls and to do what was right too? She saw the pain in Heather's eyes. Suddenly the other didn't matter, she knew she had to do something to make Heather feel better.

Paige left the group of laughing, giggling girls and asked Heather if she could play with her. Heather's face brightened. Soon Paige and Heather were having a great time. Heather's laughter and joy drew a crowd. Soon everyone thought it was cool to play with Heather.

Paige is a Christian. She learned Christian ethics at home from her godly parents. Christian ethics in Biblical terms are the fruit of the Spirit which are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Kindness and love motivated Paige to feel Heather's pain and to respond in a compassionate way. Goodness taught her to do the right thing, no matter what it cost her.

We teach our children Christian ethics best by the life we live before them.
