Amaziah was a pretty good king. He made things right in the kingdom and acted according to the law of Moses. Then, the time came when Esau's descendants opposed Judah. Amaziah responded by trying to hire soldiers from Israel. An unnamed prophet warned against this, in part by reasoning, "...God has power to help and to overthrow" (2 Chron. 25:8). God was able to give Amaziah so much more than wicked Israel's army (verse 10). Throughout the divided kingdom period, the repeated idea communicated to both nations (Israel and Judah) is that the battle belongs to the Lord.
What blessed assurance for us to know that God's promise is the same today. He has the power to help and to overthrow in our lives. The answer is not in drugs and alcohol, material things, illicit relationships, perversion, or the like. We are going to face a variety of challenges and adversities so long as we live. Each time, God has power to help and to overthrow. When we struggle, God has power to help and to overthrow. When we hurt, God has power to help and to overthrow. When we fail, God has power to help and to overthrow. When we set goals, God has power to help and to overthrow. When we are confused, God has power to help and to overthrow.
Amaziah eventually rejected this truth and turned elsewhere for help (verses 14ff). This led to his demise. Let us overcome the temptation to turn from God and seek for help in some other place.
