The Evil That Men Do
by Jerry Brewer
"In the beginning, God."

It is no accident that the Bible begins with those words. God is the Great First Cause of all that is. He is eternal, His moral law is immutable, and nations who forget those things are doomed to wallow in a morass of meaningless existence. That's why the "answers" to the unspeakable outrage in Littleton, Colorado cannot be found in a secular society. Having rejected the truth that, "In the beginning, God," America has embraced the national deity of secular humanism-a deity which provides no answers to the deepest questions of life.

What happened in Littleton is the manifestation of pure evil. It cannot be explained by a materially deprived childhood, poverty, or a lack of education and self-esteem. It is the evil that manifests itself when we value what we have above what we are. It is the evil that entered the world when Eve was tempted to become "as God." It is the evil that is manifested when we pursue an agenda that is human-centered rather than God-centered. It is the evil that is manifested when a nation forgets that "In the beginning, God." It is the evil that manifests itself in upper middle class homes when mothers abandon their God-given responsibilities to home and family, and fathers demand to have it so in order to amass that which they will one day leave behind. It is the evil that manifests itself in homes where meaningless worldly values are sucked into a spiritual vacuum. No amount of human reason, worldly possessions, or self-esteem can provide the "why" of Littleton's tragedy. The answer lies in a society that is rotten to its epicenter because it has decided that God is no longer needed.

After the busloads of psychiatrists, counselors, and "trauma" experts have departed from Littleton, America will go back to worshipping at Mammon's altar and embracing the secular catechism which reads, "In Dow Jones We Trust."

As America stands at the edge of Human Secularism's dark canyon, plaintively wailing, "Why?" the only answer it can hear is the futile echo of its own voice. It may not be next week or next month or next year, but this tragedy will be repeated in another time and place because without God there is no answer-only the evil that men do.
