We know there are many who lack confidence. Sometimes
there is no confidence because of our lack of ability. I would
not begin tearing down the engine of my car because I do not have
the ability to work on it. My father has, in the past, taken motors
apart, fixed them, and put them back together again. He had confidence
in his ability.
In our spiritual life and development, we should
have confidence. This confidence comes from God. Yes, we can look
at ourselves and have plenty of reason for confidence. Placing
confidence in ourselves (especially in regard to eternity) is
risky at best. However, we can have confidence in what God has
made possible, including the coming judgment.
Let me notice a passage that should provide that
confidence. 1 John 4:16,17 reads "So we know and believe
the love God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love
abides in God, and God abides in him. In this is love perfected
with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment,
because as he is so are we in this world." (RSV)
Let me suggest, in the first place, that God loves
us and has demonstrated that love. (John 3:16) Take note that
God views us as individuals closely identified with His Son, Jesus
Christ, and will deal with us accordingly. Therefore, why should
we fear when "IN CHRIST" our condemnation has been removed?
(Romans 8:1) Secondly, because His love is perfected in us, we
can have confidence for the day of judgment. We need not worry
about the outcome because we have lived a confident life. Of course,
that life includes obedience to His will.
