Learning To Walk

Eddie Cooper

Recently, we were able to spend time with our first-born grandson, Austin. He is one year old and is learning to walk. This is an exciting time in the life of his parents.

I was thinking when calling him to come to me how dependent he is on his parents and grandparents to give him the security that he needs to take those first steps. He takes a wobbly step, and he looks around to see if there is anyone nearby. Sometimes he puts up his hands, as if to say, "I need someone to hold on to." There is a lesson that we can learn from a child's beginning to walk.

A person who has just become a new babe in Christ must learn to walk in a different way. Some scriptures on walking that we, as well as new babes in Christ, need to incorporate into our lives are "Let us walk honestly, as in the day," (Romans 13:13); "Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh," (Galatians 5:16, 25); "And walk in love," (Ephesians 5:2); "... let us walk by the same rule," (Philippians 3:16); "... walk humbly with thy God," (Micah 6:8); "... keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him." (Deuteronomy 8:6), and "Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time." (Colossians 4:5)

As we and the new babe in Christ walk in this life, we are totally dependent upon God. As a child looks to his parents for security, support, and help, we need to look to God for security, support, and help. "Lord, be thou my helper." (Psalms 30:10) "Behold, God is mine helper:" (Psalms 54:4), and "So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." (Hebrews 13:6) God is always there for us, ready to give us a hand to help us up when we fall just as we do for the baby that is learning to walk. "... and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:20)

When you walk with God, you are walking with one who upholds you in the security of His mighty hands. Reach for God's hand, as the little child does for his parents', and take that first step with Him today. -1036 Greenland Circle, South Charleston, WV 25309. Eddiecooperi1O36@hotmail.com
