As we edit this issue, we are, again, in the midst of an intense national presidential election year. The positions of the candidates and their political party platforms on the moral and ethical issues that face our country weigh heavily upon our hearts. Issues such as legalizing homosexual marriages, allowing abortions on demand, partial-birth abortions, legalizing new forms of gambling and permitting their use in ever increasing areas are troubling to Christians.
Our hope is neither in the Democratic nor the Republican party nor in their present banner carriers. Our hope is in the LORD. Regardless of who may win these elections, we will always remember, “the powers that be are ordained of God.” Romans 13:1-7. Civil powers are, in this sense, “the ministers of God” to God’s children for good. God has used civil authorities of every sort to accomplish His Will. The Roman government administrations were corrupt beyond our imaginations; yet, the church grew rapidly. In fact, it was through the powers of the Roman government that God established conditions that were ideal for the carrying of the gospel throughout the empire! Paul’s appeal to Caesar enabled him to preach the gospel in Caesar’s own household. We believe our God is active in the affairs of men. He can change the times and the seasons; He can remove and set up kings. He rules in the kingdoms of men and gives them to whomsoever He will. We pray for our leaders, that we may live quiet and peaceable lives, and we submit ourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake – inasmuch as they are according to the will of God. We make the best decisions we are able to make and cast all of our care upon Him. He cares for us.
The lectureship at Martinsburg was wonderful. Brothers Warren Kenney, Ed Floyd, the elders, and the congregation made wonderful preparations and were gracious hosts. The lessons were excellent. Read brother Warren’s report on page four.
Our circulation goal of 2,800 continues to evade us, but we are not discouraged. Last month it was 2,703. We continue to depend upon God and you. Thank you for all of your help. Please continue. –Albert.
