Albert E. Farley

Our nation will observe its 233rd year of political freedom from England on July 4th. We are thankful to God for the many freedoms we have as citizens of the United States of America. We are aware that these freedoms have come at a terrible price. Hundreds of thousands of men and women have died, and many more have given their lives in service to our nation in order to make these freedoms possible for us.

Jesus said, “Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” Our nation, though enjoying many political and religious freedoms is caught in the tangled web of sin through covetousness, greed, pleasure, drunkenness, fornication, drug addiction, abortion on demand, the homosexual curse, etc. Our plight is made worse by the efforts of politicians and false religious leaders who make false promises and offer false hopes. We need true freedom! True freedom can only be found in Christ and in His Word. Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-36.

In West Virginia, our motto is Montani Sempter Liberi (Mountaineers Are Always Free). In the West Virginia Christian, we have adapted this to Montani Sempter Liberi in Christo (Mountaineers Are Always Free in Christ)! The church of Christ is the only truly free nation of the world and the gospel of Christ is the only means of this freedom. 1 Peter 2:9; Romans 6:16, 17. Today, we, as Christians, need to stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free and not be entangled again with any yoke of bondage! Galatians 5:1.

Our work, with this paper, is to promote this true freedom. Thank you for helping us. Our circulation for June was 2,794 copies. Our present goal is to achieve and maintain 2,800. – Albert.
