Little Fingers, Little Toes

Eleanor Powell

Little fingers, little toes

 were in this home today.

Memories all came flooding back

 of those I’d stored away.

Little giggles, little laughs

 rippled all around.

Little steps upon the floor;

 what a precious sound!

Little touches on the arm,

 small touches on the cheek.

All of those “Don’t be in there!” places,

 Little eyes would like a peek.

Little cries that filled the room;

 small smudges of dirt,

Little tears that filled the eyes

 when one’s finger gets hurt.

Little smiles that flowed across

 the room into my heart.

Please, God, never let these memories

 from my being part.

Little fingers, little toes

 were in this home today.

Memories all came flooding back

 of those I’d stored away.

Please God, hold these teardrops back

 but, later, let them flow.

Thank you, God, for telling me

 that Little Ones must grow.

Little messes, little spills

 across the fresh-swept floor,

Dear God, let the stains stay there

 on my heart ever more.

Little fingerprints upon the glass

 that shine, oh, so bright,

Please keep them in my memory

 far into the night.

Little fingers, little toes,

 plant them in my heart,

Keep them in my memories,

 let them never part.
