When The Word Is Opened

Rick Morris

The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 119:105, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." In this passage of scripture much is told about the solution to society's problems today.

When the word of God is opened, the righteousness (right ways) of God is revealed. Paul wrote in Romans 1:16-17, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith." In a world that is so full of confusion, strife, and sin, we need God's right ways to guide us in the light. David knew exactly what he was talking about when he said that God's word would light his path; it would show him the way; it would lead him. Paul said THEREIN (in the word) is the righteousness of God revealed. Opened, God's word will lead us to the shores of heaven. Unopened the word of God is like the road map folded, it cannot guide.

When the word of God is opened, faith is the result. Paul wrote to the Romans in Romans 10:17, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Notice Paul did not say that faith cometh by the word alone! Again, an unopened Bible is like a folded road map: it cannot direct you. Faith cometh by HEARING the word of God. When God's word is preached and eager listeners receive it, the result is an obedient faith. Only the word of God will produce the kind of faith with which God is well-pleased.

When the word of God is opened, truth is presented. Jesus said in John 17:17, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." God's word is true. In a world so full of lies, the truth must be made known. If the word of God is opened, the truth will come out, and all liars will be exposed. The wise man wrote in Proverbs 30:5-6, "Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar." Brethren, when we add to God's word, we sin. When we add to God's word, we will be found to be liars.

We find ourselves facing great moral challenges in our society today. Men are going down uncharted paths with their stands on abortion, gambling, adultery, fornication, and, even now, gay marriages. The answer? The word of God opened! - P.O. Box 23, Bucyrus, OH 44820.
