We Need Men Who Will Be Men

Roger A. Rush

An article in the Columbus Dispatch (6-15-99) under the caption "TV Dads Get No Respect" reported that TV fathers usually act like idiots! In the study, conducted by Wade Horn, a psychologist, columnist, and president of the National Fatherhood Initiative, only four shows out of more than 100-plus airing on networks during a season give dads a "fair shake."

There is a shortage of good role models on television. This probably reflects the realities of modern life. Men are no longer portrayed as men because many have relinquished their role as head of the home. You probably remember the flap among Southern Baptists over a reaffirmation of Ephesians, chapter 5, regarding the role of husbands and wives in marriage. They reaffirmed the leadership role of men in marriage. They were right on target in regard to their emphasis, but they were strongly criticized for taking the stand they took. What the Bible says on this issue, and most others, is irrelevant in today's society.

Organization and authority are both essential to the smooth operation of any institution, organization, or association of people. "But I would have you to know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God" (1 Corinthians 11:3). God is over all. Christ is over man. Man is over woman. The text reasserts the leadership role of man in the home and church. An effort has been underway for some time now to remove man from his divinely ordained leadership role, and many men have willing obliged.

I know, full well, that some (especially women) will strongly disagree with the biblical mandate and charge prejudice, bigotry, and bias. Nothing in Scripture says that men are superior to women. They are not. However, men and women do have differing roles. Man was not intended to be a woman's master. She was not designed to be his slave. Marriage is a partnership. Every partnership needs a leader, and God designated man to fill that role. Society suffers when the divine plan is not followed!
