Albert E. Farley

The most common plague among us is the sin of lying. Satan is the father of it; it is the first recorded sin committed on earth. Genesis 3:4; John 8:44. It is so common among all nations that the world most often takes it for granted and does not consider its deadliness. In fact, it is so common that it is encouraged by Liar Contests in which many Christians – even preachers – compete to be the biggest! It shows itself in every profession of life and flourishes in most: used car salesmen, lawyers, politicians, preachers, etc. Of the seven sins that God hates and that are an abomination to Him, two of them involve the sin of lying: a lying tongue and a false witness that speaketh lies. Proverbs 6:16-19.

Why can we not see the destructiveness of the telling of lies? How much hurt has been caused? How many lives have been lost? How many souls have been damned? All liars shall have their part in the lake of fire with the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters. Revelation 21:8.

May God help us to put away lying and to speak every man truth with his neighbor. Ephesians 4:25. We have put off the old man with his deeds and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of Christ who created us! Colossians 3:9, 10.
