What Now?

“…not a political issue … a Biblical truth.”

Warren F. Kenney

It has been called an “edge question.” I saw the question just today on the back of a shirt a lady wore as she walked down the street in Martinsburg. I had never heard the term edge question until today. Maybe I really do lead a sheltered life. Imagine my surprise when I typed “What is an Edge Question?” into my browser and came up with 59,800,000 results. Edge questions include such questions as: “What have you changed your mind about?” “What are you optimistic about?” “What changes everything?”

The question I saw displayed on the aforementioned shirt was, “What Now?” I have asked that question many times without even being aware that it was an edge question.

I was asking myself that question after hearing the following quote today on the radio: A newborn child “will ultimately develop into a human being” if he or she is properly fed and socialized. (http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=51676). Do you see the implication here? The implication is that a baby does not become human until he or she is properly fed and socialized. How long does that take? Who makes the judgment? What about those precious babies that are not properly fed or socialized? This is a radical statement, and the inherent dangers are many. The abortionists tell us that a fetus (unborn child) does not become human life until it is viable. If this statement becomes policy in our nation, that viability has been moved beyond birth by several years. One can only assume that the right to kill moves by the same number of years.

You may wonder why I would be concerned that such would ever become policy in our nation. I wonder because the statement quoted above was made by John P. Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Many are already calling President Obama “The Abortion President.” It seems to this observer that he wears the mantle with pride. He has surrounded himself with some of the most radical, liberal thinkers of our time.

I consider myself an optimist most of the time. However, I am scared. I am scared about the future of this nation in which I grew up, and to which I owe so much. One of the things that lead to the downfall of nations is a devaluation of human life. How long can a nation survive when she is on the course we are now on? I do not know the answer to that, but I do know I am scared. What kind of nation will my great-grandchildren inherit? Of course, if they are not properly fed and socialized, it becomes a moot question.

May God help us to have the courage to proclaim boldly the sanctity of human life. Friends, that is not a political issue; that is a Biblical truth. –Central church of Christ, 90 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25403. wfkenney44@comcast.net
