Occupy America

Denver Thomas

Surely everyone these days is familiar with the OCCUPY AMERICA movement that is sweeping these United States of America. Whether we might agree with their intent and method, we must agree that they believe in what they are doing and are extremely active in the cause. They demonstrate great enthusiasm for what they believe. For the most part, the participants are peaceful and law abiding. Hardship is not a deterrent nor are weather conditions. It seems they are willing to forego comfort for what they believe in!

Jesus Christ had a much greater cause and spent His entire life here upon the earth pleading and advancing His cause. The early church continued that cause as we read in Acts 2:30-47. “And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

We read of Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:23-28 as saying “Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.” No one can deny that Paul was extremely active in that cause, as well.

The world today seems a lot like that of Genesis 6:5, “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” We may wonder who will find grace in His sight the next time.

Would it not be great if we would generate a great level of involvement in the cause for which our Savior gave His life on that cruel cross of Calvary so many years ago? Sadly, there are few who are willing to carry on that cause in these modern days and hours. It seems most have decided to “camp out” in comfortable surroundings behind closed doors and “comfort one another with words” on occasion. Meanwhile the world continues to decay, morally, day by day, and the lost are forgotten.

By their lack of action, one can easily assume that many are unaware of or choose to disregard what Jesus said in Matthew 28:18-20. “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
