Why Should the Church Teach and Preach the Gospel?
The Church is Self-sufficient to carry out it's work of Evangelism.
Our Local Church may Cooperate with other Local Churches to carry out its Mission work.
Hindrances to fulfilling our Responsibility in Mission work.
Conclusion.

INTRODUCTION.

1. The primary purpose of the church is to proclaim the gospel to a lost and dying world.

Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:  10  To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,   11  According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: (KJV)

Matt 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:   20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (KJV)

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.  16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (KJV)

Luke 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:   47  And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (KJV)

1Tim 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.   (KJV)

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. (KJV)

If our Lord's purpose for coming was to seek and save the lost, what should our purpose in life be?

2. There are benefits in evangelizing the lost.

A. We are doing the Lord's will.

Amen. (KJV)

B. We are glorifying God.

1Cor 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. (KJV)

C. We are sharing a message by which men are delivered

1Cor 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;   2  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.  3  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;    4  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: (KJV)

D. We are expanding the borders of the kingdom.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.   39  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.   40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.         41  Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. (KJV)

Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. (KJV)

E. Righteousness is being increased and sin diminished.

Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?   2  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? (KJV)

Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. (KJV)

F. Nations, homes, etc. are being strengthened.

Prov 14:34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. (KJV)

Prov 9:17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. (KJV)

G. We are delivering our own souls.

Matt 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (KJV)

3. Our mission emphasis is to be here and abroad, among all nations and ethic groups. To isolate one area to the exclusion of the other is to loose sight of its scope. As much as we have capability and opportunity we must be personally involved in this effort.

4. In this study I want to focus our attention on four areas of thought.

A. Why the church is to spread (preach) the gospel.

B. The church is self-sufficient to perform its work of evangelism.

C. Our local church may cooperate with other local churches to carry out its mission work.

D. Hindrances to fulfilling our responsibilities in mission work.

I. WHY SHOULD THE CHURCH TEACH AND PREACH THE GOSPEL?

A. Because Christ commanded it.

(KJV)

B. Because faith in God and Christ cannot be produced without it.

Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.   14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?   15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!  16  But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?       17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (KJV)

John 20:30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:  31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. (KJV)

Acts 18:8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. (KJV)

Luke 8:12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. (KJV)

C. Because men cannot be drawn to God without it.

John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.    45  It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. (KJV)

D. Because the gospel is God's power to save.

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:  for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (KJV)

E. Because it is necessary to being born again.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.   4  Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?   5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (KJV)

1Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:   23  Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.  24  For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:  25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. (KJV)

F. Because it is the word of God, and all things that pertain to life and godliness is found within it.

2Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.   (KJV)

2Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:  (KJV)

G. Because without it there can be no salvation.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.  14  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?  (KJV)

James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. (KJV)

H. Because the church cannot grow without it.

Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. (KJV)

Acts 4:4 Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. (KJV)

Acts 6:7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. (KJV)

 I. Because without it there is no hope in the judgement.

John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. (KJV)

James 2:12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. (KJV)

II. THE CHURCH IS SELF-SUFFICIENT TO CARRY OUT IT'S WORK OF EVANGELISM.

A. We have the personnel. (Christians are commissioned to teach the lost).

(KJV)

2Tim 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. (KJV)

Acts 8:1 And Saul was consenting unto his death.   And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.  2  And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.  3  As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.                    4    Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.  (KJV)

B. We have the funds.

1. We have sufficient funds to carry out some great work for the Lord.

2. However we sometime fail to realize that evangelism is a personal responsibility and can be done with minimal cost.

a. Matt 10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.   2  Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;          3  Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus,  whose surname was Thaddaeus;  4  Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.   5  These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:  6  But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.  7  And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.   8  Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.    9  Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,  10   Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.  11  And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.  12 And when ye come into an house, salute it.  13  And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.  14   And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.  15  Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.  (KJV)

b. The Lord in Matthew chapters 8 to 20 but note he was evangelistic.

John 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:   2  The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.   3  Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 6  That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  7   Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.  8  The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.              9    Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?   10   Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?  11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.  12  If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?  13   And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.   14  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:    15  That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.   16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.    17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.   18  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.  19  And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  20  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.  21  But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.  22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.  23  And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.  24  For John was not yet cast into prison.  25  Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.   26  And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.  27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.  28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.  29  He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice:  this my joy therefore is fulfilled.   30 He must increase, but I must decrease. (KJV)

3. Although mission work can become quite expensive, yet there is a lot of evangelism to be done within area that requires simply time and effort on every members part.

C. We have the opportunity.

1. It may appear that we simply don't have the time.  This is often used as an excuse, however, this is usually due to a priority failure rather than lack of time. This can be easily illustrated with finding the time to do things we want to do. We must learn to put first things first.

Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (KJV)

D. We have the education and talent. We live in a society and culture that for the most part is reasonably educated. However, it does not take a High School or College education to know the will of God and impart that information to others.

E. The church is the Lord's divine missionary society.

     1.  The wisdom of God is to be made known through the church.

Eph 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, (KJV)

Not through some other organization.

      2.  The Holy Spirit has charged the church with upholding the church.

1Tim 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. (KJV)

a. Pillar "a prop or support" (Thayer p. 561) Vines comments      "of a local church as to its responsibility, in a collective           capacity, to maintain the doctrines of the faith by teaching and  practice". (Vol. 3, P. 184)

b. Ground "a stay, prop, support" (Thayer, P. 168)

c. This eliminates all societies and human agencies.

     3.  God is to glorified in the church not some other organization.

Eph 3:21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. (KJV)

To attempt to glorify God through some other institution other than the church is disobedience.

     4.  All religious work is to be done by the authority of Christ.

Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.   (KJV)

His authority demands that the Christian work through the local church as its’ missionary society. To do otherwise is to refuse to abide by divine authority.

III. OUR LOCAL CHURCH MAY COOPERATE WITH OTHER LOCAL CHURCHES TO CARRY OUT ITS MISSION WORK.

A. The Bible authorizes a plurality of churches to send funds to support an evangelist.

Phil 4:15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.   16  For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. (KJV)

2Cor 11:8 I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service. (KJV)

B. This may involve.

1. TV and Radio word.

2. Support of a missionary.

3. Distribution of printed material.

Back to top of page

IV. HINDRANCES TO FULFILLING OUR RESPONSIBILITY IN MISSION WORK.
(There are a lot of reasons relative to a lack of emphasis on evangelism).

A. A lack of love for God.

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. (KJV)

John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me:   and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.  22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?       23  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words:   and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.   24  He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. (KJV)

B. A lack of love and concern for lost people. God loved the world to the extent that He gave His Son for it.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)

1John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. (KJV)

Jesus came into the world to seek and save the lost.

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. (KJV)

1Tim 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.   (KJV)

Shouldn't we have a mutual concern for the lost.

C. Be preoccupied with other things. there is nothing wrong with enjoying the good and enjoyable things of life, but anything that hinders ones doing the will of God becomes wrong.

Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (KJV)

D. A lack of concern for the church. The Lord died for it.

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. (KJV)

Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; (KJV)

Shouldn't we love that for which our Lord died, and do all we can to promote it, defend it, and spread its borders.

(KJV)

E. Too much love for the world.

2Tim 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. (KJV)

Christians are to love God rather than the world.

1John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. (KJV)

When one loves God as he should, doing the will of God will naturally follow.

F. A lack of faith.

James 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?  15  If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,  16  And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?  17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.       18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.   19  Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.  20  But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?   21  Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?    22  Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?   23  And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.   24  Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.   25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?   26   For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (KJV)

Christians are to walk by faith not by sight.

2Cor 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) (KJV)

The faith that avails in Christ is the faith by love.

Gal 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. (KJV)

CONCLUSION.

1. I believe the church is to be deeply involved in evangelism in our locality and abroad, I believe it is to be done through the church not another organization and it can be done in a cooperative effort, because the Bible so authorizes.

2. Let us all be involved in winning the lost, that is why the Lord came.
