INTRODUCTION:

1. "Salute one another with a holy kiss, the church of Christ salute you."  Rom 16:16 Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you. (KJV)

2. In our last study together, we considered "what the church of Christ is not". We saw that the church of Christ is not:

3. In this lesson I want to focus our attention on what the church of Christ is.

4. In the New Testament there are many descriptive phrases that are applied to the Lord's church. These phrases give emphasis to various features of the church and set forth it's nature.

5. In our study I hope to develop in us a deeper understanding and a greater appreciation for the church of Christ, by considering the different ways the bible designates the New Testament Church.

I. THE CHURCH OF THE NEW TESTAMENT IS THE CALLED OUT.

A. The term "CHURCH" is from the New Testament word "EKKLESIA", which occurs some 115 times in the New Testament.  The word ekklesia is a compound word. It is from "ek" which means out, and "klesis" meaning a calling, hence the idea "a calling out".

B. The word church is used in two senses in the New Testament.

1. It may refer to all those called out of the world into God's service - universally.

Matt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (KJV)

Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church:  and he is the saviour of the body.  24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.  25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; (KJV)

2. It may refer to those called out of the world into God's service in a specific locality.

1Cor 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: (KJV)

1Thess 1:1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ:  Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)

C. The nature of the calling.

1. It's a divine calling.

1Peter 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. (KJV)

2Tim 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (KJV)

2. It's a Holy calling.

1Thes 4:7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. (KJV)

2Tim 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, (KJV)

1Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; (KJV)

3. It's a Heavenly calling.

Heb 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; (KJV)

D. To what are we called.

1. Into the fellowship and peace of Christ.

1Cor 1:9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. (KJV)

Col 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. (KJV)

2. To be children of God.

Rom 9:25 As he saith also in O'see, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.  26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. (KJV)

3. To be Saints.

1Cor 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: (KJV)

Rom 1:7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)

E. The calling comes through the gospel.

2Thes 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:  14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)

II. THE CHURCH IS THE HOUSEHOLD OF GOD.

A. The church being called the house of God refers to the family of God.

1Tim 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. (KJV)

Heb 3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. (KJV)

Eph 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; (KJV)

Eph 3:15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, (KJV)

B. The structure of the household.

1. God is the Father.

Eph 3:14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, (KJV)

Eph 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (KJV)

1Cor 8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. (KJV)

2. Christ, the son over the House of God.

Heb 3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. (KJV)

3. Christians are all the children of God.

Gal 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.  27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (KJV)

1John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. (KJV)

C. What we enjoy in the family.

1. Fatherly provision.

Rom 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. (KJV)

Jam 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. (KJV)

Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. (KJV)

2. Fatherly protection.

Phil 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.   6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (KJV)

1Cor 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.   13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV)

3. Fatherly correction.

Heb 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.  5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:   6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.  7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?  8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.  9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?  10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.  11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous:  nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. (KJV)

4. Fatherly love.

1Jn 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. (KJV)

Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.  37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.  38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,  39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (KJV)

5. Fatherly access.

Matt 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.  7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.  8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.  9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. (KJV)

III. THE CHURCH IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

A. The Kingdom was preached as being at hand.

Matt 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (KJV)

Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,  15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. (KJV)

B. Certain parables set forth the church as the Kingdom.

Matt 13:24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:  (KJV)

Matt 13:44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.  45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: (KJV)

Matt 13:47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: (KJV)

C. People who obeyed the gospel were members of the Kingdom.

Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: (KJV)

D. The Lord's supper is in the Kingdom.

Luke 22:16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.  17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:  18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. (KJV)

Luke 22:29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; (KJV)

Luke 22:30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (KJV)

E. After the day of Pentecost the Kingdom is spoken of as already existed.

Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. (KJV)

1Thes 2:12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. (KJV)

F. Demands as the citizens of the Kingdom.

1. Must do the will of the Father.

Matt 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (KJV)

2. Set our affections on heavenly things.

Col 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.  2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.  3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.  4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him  in glory. (KJV)

3. To be servants in the Kingdom.

Matt 20:20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.  21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.  22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.   23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.  24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.   25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.  26 But it shall not be so among you:  but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;  27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:  28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (KJV)

4. To be sacrificial.

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (KJV)

G. One enters the Kingdom by the New Birth.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.  4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?  5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (KJV)

IV. THE CHURCH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST.

A.The Church is clearly identified as the Body of Christ.

Eph 1:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,  23 Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all. (KJV)

Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (KJV)

Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: (KJV)

B. The New Testament teaches there is only one body.

1. There are many members yet one body.

Rom 12:4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:  5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. (KJV)

1Cor 12:20 But now are they many members, yet but one body. (KJV)

2. Jew and Gentile were reconciled in one body.

Eph 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: (KJV)

3. One body, all of these show the singularity of the Church.

Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;  5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,  6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (KJV)

C. Christ is the sole head of the Church.

Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church:  who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (KJV)

Eph 1:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,  23 Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all. (KJV)

D. Christians make up the Body.

1Cor 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. (KJV)

1. Every member contributes its part to the edifying of the body.

Eph 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. (KJV)

2. The body is to be united.

Rom 12:4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:  5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. (KJV)

3. Each member has a work to perform.

1Cor 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.  15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?   16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is   it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?  18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.  19 And if they were all one member, where were the body? (KJV)

4. There is to be a mutual care and interest in each others needs.

Acts 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;   45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. (KJV)

5. There is to be a pure and mutual love between members of the body.

1Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:  (KJV)

V. THE CHURCH IS THE TEMPLE OF GOD.

A. The idea of temple is a spiritual building in which deity dwells.

1Cor 3:9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. (KJV)

1Cor 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?  17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. (KJV)

Eph 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;  20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;  21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:  22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. (KJV)

1John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. (KJV)

1John 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. (KJV)

Eph 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, (KJV)

B. The temple is built upon the foundation of Christ and the Apostles.

Isa 28:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.  17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. (KJV)

1Cor 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (KJV)

Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; (KJV)

C. Christians are the stones which are built together into the Temple of God.

(KJV)

1Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.  6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. (KJV)

1Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:  10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. (KJV)

D. The temple (Church) must be built according to God's pattern revealed in the New Testament.

VI. THE CHURCH IS THE SHEEPFOLD.

A. Under this figure, Christ is the shepherd and the Christians are the sheep.

John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.  2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.  4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.  5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.  6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.  7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.  8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.  9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.  10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.  11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.  12 But he that is an hireling, and not the  shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.  13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.  14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.  15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.  16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.  17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.  18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. (KJV)

B. Since the Lord's sheep are scattered all over the earth, there exists the need for local oversight. This is provided through local eldership.

Acts 14:23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. (KJV)

C. These men are to meet specific qualifications recorded in:

1Tim 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.  2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;  3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;   4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;  5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)  6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.  7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. (KJV)

Tit 1:5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:   6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. 7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;   8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;   9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.  10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of thecircumcision:  11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. (KJV)

D. These men carry a very grievous responsibility.

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.  29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.  30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. (KJV)

1Peter 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:  2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;  3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.  4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. (KJV)

Heb 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief:  for that is unprofitable for you. (KJV)

E. We as the sheep of the fold have the responsibility of being in subjection to them as long as they do not go contrary to the will of the chief shepherd.

Heb 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief:  for that is unprofitable for you. (KJV)

Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. (KJV)

VII. THE CHURCH IS THE VINEYARD OF THE LORD.

A. The vineyard denotes a place of responsibility and labor.

Matt 21:28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.  29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.  30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.  31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first.  Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. (KJV)

Matt 20:1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.  2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.   3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,  4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.  5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.  6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?   7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.  8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.  9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.  10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.  11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,  12 Saying, These last have wrought but onehour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.  13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?  14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.  15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?  16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. (KJV)

(KJV)

1Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,  4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,  5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (KJV)

VIII. THE CHURCH IS THE BEAUTIFUL BRIDE OF CHRIST.

A. The Church is described as the bride of Christ.

Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;  26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,  27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. (KJV)

E. The bride is to be fruitful.

John 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. (KJV)

CONCLUSION:

1. The Church of Christ is the most precious thing on earth to God and should be to us.

2. It was built and purchased by our Lord Jesus Christ.

Matt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (KJV)

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. (KJV)

3. In our study thus far we have considered, 1. What the church of Christ is not and 2. What the church of Christ is. We are now ready to focus our attention on "WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST".
